Description:
The dried, aged bark of R. purshiana has been used continually for many years by both Pacific northwest native peoples and immigrant Euro-Americans as a laxative natural medicine, as one of severalanthraquinone-containing herbal medicines including the leaf and fruits of senna, the latex of Aloe vera, and the root of the rhubarb plant.
Cascara contains compounds called anthroquinones, which are responsible for cascara's powerful laxative effects. Anthraquinones trigger contractions in the colon, called peristalsis, which causes the urge to have a bowel movement. Today, it is one of the most common herbal laxatives.
Function:
1. Cascara sagrada is used as a laxative. The anthraquinones stimulate the bowel, leading to evacuation after approximately six to ten hours.
2. This herb also provokes secretion of fluid and minerals into the large intestine and inhibits their reabsorption.
3. It is suggested for situations in which a soft, easily passed stool is desirable, such as hemorrhoids or following rectal surgery. In addition, anthraquinones applied topically can protect skin from ultraviolet damage.
Application:
1. Applied in Medicine and health products.
2. Applied in pharmaceutical field.
3. Medicine and health products, beverage and food additives.
